White is the color of light and illumination. We associate white with innocence, joy and clarity.
In other cultures as in China and India the color white stands for old age, mourning and death.
To block out what is loud and to capture the dignity of calm and stillness – these are the themes of Gubbio I-VI, a series of monochromatically white paintings.

These paintings were inspired by the Porte dei Morti, the doors of the death in the renaissance town of Gubbio in Northern Italy.
Once an inhabitant passed away, these blind windows were broken open.
The dead body was pushed outside through the hole, which then was immediately closed.

Thus, everyone was constantly reminded of his own mortality – a daily memento mori.
With my abstract forms of windows and gates I want to evoke a sort of lucency, a notion of crossing and spiritual penetration.
